Rice University announces up to $2 million in annual scholarships for Indian students and inaugurates a center in Bengaluru. The Texas-based university is also strengthening its partnerships with the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.
Rice University, based in the United States, unveiled its expansion into India on Monday with the launch of Rice Global India in Bengaluru. This initiative aims to enhance global collaboration and contribute to India’s advancing education and technology sectors.
Located in India’s IT hub, the global center will develop strategies to establish formal operations in the region and strengthen partnerships with leading research and academic institutions nationwide.
President DesRoches emphasized that the scholarships reflect Rice University’s commitment to supporting master’s students. “Initially, we allocate approximately $2 million annually for scholarships to support incoming students. This will help us assess demand and plan for future expansion,” he stated.
For doctoral programs, the Texas-based university upholds its tradition of fully funding PhD candidates. These students will receive a comprehensive package that includes full tuition coverage and an annual stipend of over $35,000. The university expects strong interest in its PhD programs, with funding levels determined by the number of students admitted.
Through its undergraduate student exchange program, Rice University will fully cover expenses for students from partner institutions in India, promoting rich academic and cultural exchanges.
As part of its expansion, the university is strengthening ties with esteemed Indian institutions like the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru. According to university leaders, these partnerships aim to advance research and collaboration in critical areas such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, healthcare, and sustainable energy.

To qualify for this award, students must have completed their undergraduate degree and be enrolled full-time in an EPMP. Eligibility to apply starts in the academic term before full-time enrollment in a professional master’s program

Rice University Deadline
Rice University accepts first-year applications through Early Decision I, Early Decision II, and Regular Decision. The deadline for Early Decision I is November 1, while the deadlines for Early Decision II and Regular Decision are January 4.
