- Every summer, HZB runs an eight-week Summer Student Programme for 20 undergraduate students. International students get the chance to work on their research projects alongside HZB scientists in areas like Photon Science, Solar Cells, Catalysis, Electrochemical Energy Storage, Quantum Materials, and Accelerator Research.
- Students participate in the daily activities of research teams at HZB’s campuses in Berlin-Wannsee or Berlin-Adlershof, working in laboratories and experimental areas.
- The program also contains additional activities, such as:
- Tours of HZB research skills, like the BESSY II synchrotron radiation source and solar energy research labs.
- Outings to other research institutions in and around Berlin.
- Workshops on topics like science communication and entrepreneurship.
- A closing event with a scientific poster presentation.
- This program offers a great prospect to gain hands-on research experience and learn from experts in the field.

Application Criteria
You can apply for the program if you meet all of the following requirements:
- You are an undergraduate student (not a PhD candidate) in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science, Structural Biology, Mathematics, Engineering, Life or Environmental Sciences, or a related field.
- You have completed at least two years of full-time study in your major discipline at the university level.
- You will be enrolled as a student at your university during your stay at HZB from 7 July to 29 August 2025.
- You have a good knowledge of English (knowledge of German would be an advantage).
- You can provide a letter of reference with your application.
Application Process of Summer Student Program
Documents Required
In the first step of the application, you will need to submit the following documents in English or German. Your application can only be considered once all the documents listed below are received:
- Academic CV
- Your CV should be presented in a tabular form and in chronological order, reflecting the most important stages in your education and career.
- Keep your CV concise and clear, and do not exceed 2 pages.
2. Certificate of Enrolment
- The certificate must be valid until the end of August 2025.
- If you do not have a certificate for the summer of 2025, submit your current certificate of enrolment during the application process, and provide the summer 2025 certificate later.
3. Transcripts and Academic Degree Certificate (if applicable)
- Provide a copy of your most recent academic transcript showing your marks.
- Ensure the document is not protected so it can be opened easily.
- Copy of Passport or Identity Card
- Letter of Reference
- The letter should be written by someone who knows you well as a student and can assess your professional conduct.
4. Declaration of Certificate of Enrolment (for Non-EU and Non-EEA students)
- Students from Non-EU and Non-EEA countries must provide a working permission for Germany.
- Submit a Declaration of Certificate of Enrolment in addition to the other documents.
Selection Process
HZB supervisors submit projects for the programme as part of the student application process. After submitting the projects, supervisors can access the pool of applicants to review and select the most suitable candidates.
